Super Storm Sandy's implications on state and local finances among issues for government accountants in 2013

The Center for Governmental Accounting Education and Research hosts a conference every year to update professionals on new regulations, procedures and issues. This year, the conference also touched on how local governments will have to account for the costs of Sandy's devastating blow to New Jersey.

From the perspective of officials who see the numbers, super storm Sandy is having is a see-saw effect on New Jersey’s finances. On the one side, there are obvious losses expected in tourism revenue, business disruptions and a reduction in the wealth effect as uncertain consumers pull back on their spending. There are also communities who face the prospect of drastically diminished property taxes.
